In How Did You Get This Number we are treated to Crosley's first visit to a confessional in Paris (she is a Jew) and to her rationalization that slipping someone money and getting furniture from a store she normally couldn't afford somehow isn't stealing. I think the most disturbing essay is the one in which a bear is run over by another car on the freeway and then a highway patrolman comes along and shoots the bear to put it out of its misery. The way with which the bear is dispatched is hard and cold - I am sure this was the point of her story. Nevertheless it was a shock to read.
While the essays were mildly interesting, I could never really find myself interested in Crosley's life - I never found myself with a vested interest in the story line or the characters she presented in her essays. To put it mildly, I was slightly bored through the whole book. Again, this might be because I was thinking they were short stories - and they were essays instead, but even after I figured this out I couldn't quite get into the feel of this book.
